Part 1    Part 2    Host Request Form

Greetings from Race to the Sky

The 2004 Race to the Sky Sled Dog Race starts February 13 in Helena and will finish at our finish line near Lincoln on February 19. This is our 19th year.

Montana Sled Dog, Inc. will again offer the 350 mile race. The race is incomparably beautiful yet challenging and demands dogs and musher to be in top mental and physical shape.

Though there is ample lodging along the race communities, our Host Family Program has families in Helena who will adopt mushers and teams during race week. If you are interested, please fill out the attached form and return it with your registration (this is on a first-come basis).

I enclose race rules and a tentative schedule. Please read and understand the rules. If you have questions, please call. Your musher representative is Cindy Gallea at (406) 677-3025. She is very experienced with our race.

MSDI is proud of our race, the beauty of the Big Sky Country, the sponsor enthusiasm, the dedication of our volunteers, the superb animal care, and the hospitality. We are committed to helping mushers have a positive experience and be well-prepared to finish this race.

Mileage currently is Lincoln to Lincoln 40 miles, Lincoln to White Tail 72 miles, White Tail to Wilderness Checkpoint 50 miles, Wilderness Checkpoint to Holland Lake 53 miles, Holland Lake to Seeley Lake 51 miles, and Seeley Lake to Hi-Country 81 miles. This may change a bit but we will keep you posted.

TRAIL:
* Trail changes will be made at the discretion of the race marshal and trail crew only. The safety of the dogs and mushers are the chief concern and we will err on the side of safety.

* Trail elevations vary from about 4,000 feet to over 7,000 feet. The trail is groomed by snowmobile and trail groomers. It consists of long sections of forested areas with deep snow, ridge tops that are open and windswept, valley floors with less snowfall, and in some years limited snow depths.

* Each musher is responsible for reading and understanding the official 2003 Race to the Sky rules.
* Vets will monitor the condition of teams along the race course and will be working cooperatively with mushers to provide for the welfare of the dogs.
* All rookies must furnish the Race with detailed information about their mushing experience prior to entering either race. Musher representatives will carefully evaluate this information.

PURSE:
The race is managed by Montana Sled Dog, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation. We project a purse of $15,000.00. We are committed to raising this amount. Increases in this amount will happily be announced.

FINISHER'S CLUB:
* The Official Finisher's Club is available to assist rookies in effective training strategies, nutrition, and schedules.
